Why You Need to Do Your Physio Exercises at Home

If you've attended physiotherapy before, you've probably noticed your physio sends you home with some exercises to do between sessions. You might wonder, why bother, when I already feel so much better after my appointment?

The truth is: those exercises are just as important as the hands-on treatment you receive in the clinic. Here's why.

Your Home Program is Built for You

Your home exercises aren't generic. They're designed specifically for your body, your movement patterns, and the factors that contributed to your injury. They target the habits, weaknesses, and mobility limitations that need to change for your recovery to stick.

Think of it like learning an instrument. Seeing your teacher once a week is valuable, but the real progress happens when you practise between lessons. Repetition is what makes new patterns feel natural and automatic.

The Science Behind It

  • It takes 8-12 weeks of consistent effort to build meaningful muscle strength.

  • Research shows that targeting a muscle 2–3 times per week produces better outcomes than once a week alone.

  • Mobility exercises help reduce range-of-motion limitations so you can move more comfortably day to day.

  • Exercise also helps with pain relief by calming the nervous system and promoting blood flow to healing tissues.

Your Exercises Will Change Over Time

As you progress, your exercises will evolve. As your strength and movement capacity improve, we'll bump things up to keep challenging you and to reduce the risk of re-injury.

What Happens If You Skip Them?

While you may still see some improvement from clinic visits alone, you're less likely to address the underlying reasons you got injured in the first place. This can lead to re-injury, a slower recovery, and difficulty returning to the activities you love at the level you want.

We know life is busy. If you're struggling to fit your exercises in, talk to us — we can work with you to make the program more realistic and sustainable.
